Parts Of Speech In English Grammar|Pronoun And Its Types

Pronoun:

                   The  word pronoun is composed of two parts.

The composed (pro) which means previous/ point

The root word (noun), which means, Name  ,so (pronoun) basically means the previous Name

Definition:

                Pronoun is a word or Group that is used instead of noun to avoid (stop) its repetitions.


Example:

               Wali studies   Arabic, he is very intelligent

                Pronoun noun             pronoun


Types of pronoun


Pronoun are generally divided into Eleven types.


  • Subject Pronoun
  • Objective Pronoun
  • Possessive Pronoun
  • Demonstrative Pronoun
  • Indefinite Pronoun
  • Reflexive Pronoun
  • Interrogative Pronoun
  • Emphatic Pronoun
  • Distributive Pronoun
  • Relative Pronoun
  • Reciprocal Pronoun

 

1. Subject Pronoun:

                                   Subject are those pronoun which are used before main verbs to function as the subject of sentence. Subject pronoun are seven in numbers.

Examples:

              I, We, You, They, He, She It

Note: In English Grammar Subject pronoun refer to three grammatical people.


First   Person:  I , We

2nd     Person:    You

3rd     Person:     They, He, She, It

 

2- Object Pronoun:

                            Object pronoun are those pronoun, which are used after main verb to function as they object of sentence.

Subject Pronoun                               Object Pronoun.

I                                                                      Me

We                                                                 Us

You                                                                You

He                                                                 Him                                                         

She                                                                Her

It                                                                     It

They                                                              Them

 

She teaches them.

Here she is subject pronoun which them is object pronoun.

 

3-    Possessive Pronoun:

                                          Possessive pronoun are those pronoun which can be used either before main verb or after man verb to show possession.

 Subject Pronoun                    Possessive pronoun               Objective Pronoun

Examples:

                  She has a car.

                  He has a car.

      Hers is expensive. (Hers” is possessive pronoun)

    Mine are intelligent. (Mine” is possessive pronoun)

 

4- Demonstrative Pronoun:

                                               Demonstrative pronoun are those pronoun which are used to demonstrate or points out place, person, and thing. Demonstrative pronoun are five in numbers.

Examples:

             1- This 2- That 3- These – 4 Those -5 such


ð  Those are College Students. (Those “ is demonstrative pronoun)

ð  This is my pen. (This” is demonstrative pronoun)

 

5- Indefinite Pronoun

                                 Indefinite Pronoun are those pronoun which are used instead of indefinite person, place, and thing. Indefinite pronoun generally divided into three groups.

1-Person => Someone / somebody, anyone / anybody

2- Place => somewhere, anywhere, now here

3- Thing => something, anything, nothing

 

6- Reflexive Pronoun:

                                 Reflexive pronoun are those pronouns which denote the action of a sentence turn from object back to subject. Reflexive pronoun are composed of two parts.

ð  Object pronoun/ Possessive Pronoun.

ð  (The suffixes /       Self , Selves)


Examples:   

          Himself, Myself, Yourself, Itself, Themselves                    

ð       Tahir writes himself a not (reflexive pronoun)

ð        You bought yourself nice shoes (reflexive pronoun)


7- Interrogative Pronoun

                                                 Interrogative pronoun are those pronoun, which are used to interrogative or also about noun some interrogative pronoun are listed here.

Examples:     

        Who, when, whose, which, what

ð  Who can play football very well? ( who” is interrogative)

ð  Whose son has got first division? (whose” is interrogative)

ð  Whom did you see there? (whom” is interrogative)


8-    Emphatic Pronoun:

                                     Emphatic pronoun are those pronoun, which are used before main verb to emphasize noun or another pronoun, some emphatic pronoun are listed here.


Examples:    

        Himself, herself, itself, myself, ourselves, yourself, themselves.

=> They themselves come late to class. (themselves” is emphatic pronoun)

=> You yourself told me everything. (yourself “main verb reflexive pronoun)

 

 

9- Distributive Pronoun:

                                       Distributes pronoun are those pronoun which are used to replace noun individually. Some distributive pronoun are listed here.   Each, Every, Either, Neither.


Examples:

               Tawab bought two car.

          Each is expensive. (Each “is distributive pronoun)


10. Relative Pronoun

                                     Relative Pronoun are those pronoun, which are used to connect noun with dependent clauses.


There are two types of Relative Pronoun.


1. Simple Relative Pronoun

                                                Simple relative pronoun are those pronoun, which are used single in form.


Examples:

       Who, Which, That, Whom, When, Where, Whose 


2. Compound Relative Pronoun

                                                 Compound relative pronoun are those pronoun, which are composed of one simple relative pronoun and the other word ever.


Examples

    Whoever, Whomever, Whosever, Whichever, Whatever, Whenever, Wherever.


Examples

1. He respect a teacher who lives in London. (Teacher whole lives” is Noun, Relative Pronoun, and Independent Clause).

2. He somewhose four wives. (Indefinite pronoun, Relative pronoun, Independent clause).

 

11. Reciprocal Pronoun

                                       Reciprocal pronoun are those pronoun, which used to replaced noun mutually get together.


Examples

     Each other, Every other, One other.


Examples

1. Practice with each other. (Each other” is Reciprocal pronoun).


2. Pass this duster to every other. (Every other’ is Reciprocal pronoun).
